I think, CB is referring to the phrase as used by hunters...
"fair chase" refers to giving the quarry a fair chance to elude the hunter.....
His implication would therefore be;
You will have an unfair advantage by using those flys, ie. using a 50 cal machine gun for hunting rabbits or squirrels
when a .22 cal is all that is required....

Flies like these make me feel like I could just carry a few variations of this pattern and not need anything else for a season. These just fit the bill. Wonderful threads guys.

Jon.....William.....Ray.....etc., please you guys be absolutely sure your bring a Tenkara rod, & a 6 ft. boo.....or somethin' short and light.........(you can get a 6 ft. glass rod [Eagle Claw] from Bass Pro for like $20., or at least you used to be able to), so when we head way upstream for Wild & Native Brookies.....you'll be prepared for anything. Your gonna flip when you see how beautiful these little Jewels are.....and you may end up don' more of that kinna fishin' (with flymphs) than anything else while in the Catskills.......tye your flymphs relitively small, which includes size 10.....& smaller. Those Brookies will take an amazingly large fly.....and do not worry bout over-hackling them. You may also want to do a little practice casting in tight areas before headin' for Roscoe. Most of your casting will be within 30 ft., and you have to be stealthy, & accurate. Your going to catch the most beautiful little Trout you've ever seen.....

Mark - I built a 7ft-6in/4wt fiberglass rod a couple summers ago. This rod sounds perfect for the conditions you describe and is a joy to cast/fish. At some point I want to invest in a Tenkara rod, but that will likely have to wait until next spring.
