Otto - What camera are you using? Have you tried zooming in to make the fly look larger in the viewfinder? The following post has some really helpful information about photographing flies:

I am using a fuji s9000 and I'm using the supra macro setting. Trust me, I know I am just a few adjustments away but need to take a break before I get too frustrated. Karsten's posts have helped a lot but for some reason photoshop tells me that my pictures are 256 kb but when I post them they are only 138 to 150 kb. Ahhhhh!! But it will happen. Thanks for your suggestions and keep them coming. Otto

I just looked up the specification for your camera (nice!). Based on the specifications, you should be able to take better photos. Your statement suggests that you may be playing with the image resolution settings on the camera, to get smaller images. I would suggest a different approach. Make sure that your camera is set to it's highest resolution setting (9 Megapixel / 3488 x 2616 pixel / Fine). The finished images can then be cropped down to get the view that you want. You can then export the images to a lower resolution to reduce the overall size of the file you intend to upload.

I shoot most photos with a 10 Megapixel camera, and then export them to 640 pixels wide image. I just tried it on one of my photos and found that the file size went form 2.4 MB down to only 34.2 KB. The finished image looks identical to the original, just smaller. I use Google's free photo editing software called Picasa.

Karsten posted a helpful tutorial earlier today, using a couple other image editing software (http://www.flymphforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=2585)

Ray, Howdy;

I sure am happy to know folks like you and Karsten. Folks that are always willing, and from what I've seen in your case,
almost anxious to jump in and lead the blind into the light... :D

Hi Otto,

Great to see some of your photos. :D Ray has given you some sage advice especially regarding your camera settings. I downloaded your camera manual and think you should look at the page titled 'QUALITY MODE', it's page 59 on the PDF, might be a different page on your manual. I suggest you select 9MF or 9MN, either will be fine the first will be the highest quality setting. :D
Do me a favour when you get a chance and look at the file size of one of the untouched images (One that hasn't been processed, that's come straight off the camera). Let me know the dimensions of that file, you can do this in explorer (where you view files in windows) by simply locating the file and clicking on it, one of the details should be dimensions ie. 3648 X 2736. This will give a good indication to me of where you're going wrong.

Another consideration is how close are you getting to the flies/subject? It looks to me like you may not be getting close enough. In super macro mode you can almost touch the fly with your lens, not that I'm suggesting you do that. ;) The shots of multiple flies are pretty tricky to compose, I would focus on taking pics of single flies first then move onto group shots. Without getting to technical and geeky the group shots are difficult because you cannot focus on all the flies unless they are on the same flat plane/distance from the lens. The camera in macro mode has a very shallow depth of field meaning that if you focus on the hackle of a large dry fly in front of the lens, chances are the body of that fly will be blurry/slightly out of focus, the hackle opposite the front will definitely be out of focus.

I hope that helps a bit. We'll figure it out, don't give up, it's a lot of fun when you get it sorted. If all else fails send me a PM and 'll send you my email, that way you can email me one of your original files. Not a bad idea aactually, that way I can immediately tell whats going wrong. I'm happy to do the latter if you feel like it, no pressure. :D

Cheers

Karsten
