After taking a wrong turn at the corner of Hidy Street and Leisenring Boulevard, I thought I would post what I hope will be a good Yellow Sally nymph imitation.

Hook- Mustad 9671 size 16
Thread - Uni 6/0 Lt. Cahill
Tail- Golden Goose Biots
Abdomen - Yellow UNI-Stretch
Rib - Yellow UNI-Stretch (corded)
Thorax- Mahogany Superfine Dubbing
Collar - Brown Hen Hackle

Image

Here is the nymph I have used for quite a few years. Hope the SH fishes aswell.

Even though I took a wrong turn. I still learned some usefull information. ;)

Like Donald said, who cares what it is called, so long as it catches fish?

Your soft-hackle variation on the yellow nymph should be worth a shot. I hope it works!

Wayne - Could you please describe the tying sequence for the first fly? I want to try to duplicate this pattern. I am curious how you are tying with both the UNI-Stretch at the abdomen, and the regular thread at the front. Are you creating the abdomen first, then tying off with the regular thread to finish the thorax/hackle? I really like the flies, especially the first one. I would be tempted to add a brown rib to emphasis the segmentation (not a criticism - just commenting on how I would match my local insect).

Bare with me Ray. This is my first attempt at a tutorial. Kinda nervous here. Sweating a little, trembling alot....I can do this...here we go.....

Hook- Mustad 9671 size 14
Thread - Uni 8/0 Camel
Tail- Golden Goose Biots
Abdomen - Yellow UNI-Stretch
Rib - Yellow UNI-Stretch (corded)
Thorax- Mahogany Superfine Dubbing
Collar - Brown Hen Hackle

Attatch Uni-Stretch and tie in the tail.

Image

Build a tapered abdomen, then cord your UNI-Stretch and color with a Sharpie Marker (Brown). Use the cord to rib the abdomen. Whip finish ahead of the abdomen, clip off the UNI-Stretch .

Image

Attatch thread and Hen Hackle at the same time behind the eye of the hook.

Image

Build a thorax

Image

Wind your hackle three wraps, tie off.

Image

Thats my sequence sir!

Another approach would be to tie your camel thread in at the tail, and use it to rib the abdomen, tie off the UNI-Stretch, and continue from there.. Lots of ways to skin a cat.

Outstanding contribution! That is exactly the fly I was picturing. Thanks for taking the time to do the tutorial Wayne. Great job illustrating the tying sequence. Very easy to understand. I have added this thread to the SBS/Tutorials in the reference section, for future reference.
