3 Olives
Hook: Mustad Signature R50, size 18
Thread: Pearsall's Gossamer silk, dark olive
Hackle: top fly - light barred blue dun hen
bottom left - dark tan dun hen
bottom right - medium dun hen
Body: tying thread
Tail: Bronze mallard flank
Re: 3 Olives
That is very nice tying, especially on Size #18 hooks. I know there are numerous small mayflies that get lumped under the "Olive" label, but my personal on-stream experience would lead me to pick the one with medium dun hackle if I had to choose among these.
Some of the same morons who throw their trash around in National parks also vote. That alone would explain the state of American politics. ~ John Gierach, "Still Life with Brook Trout"

Tom,
Love your variations on this wonderful theme! I have to agree with Bill. The bottom right - med. dun hen gets it for me! I have it on my near future wish list to meet up with you and watch you tie....and take a ton of notes!
Your pal in Ankorage (Southeast Ohio actually),

Fish when you can, not when you should! Anything short of this is just a disaster.
Re: 3 Olives
I agree with Bill & Doug -- the medium dun does it for me.
Have you tried using heavily waxed primrose silk instead of olive? You end with about the same color, but the waxiness adds something to the fly, I think.

Yep, I'd like to try a different wax than the one I have. What do you use?redietz wrote:Have you tried using heavily waxed primrose silk instead of olive? You end with about the same color, but the waxiness adds something to the fly, I think.

Izaak,
Those are wonderful ties and I like your posts. Not to take away from your post but I am attaching a BWO that I use on a local tailwater stream. It is tied on a #28 daiichi hook. Sorry but I used my phone for the picture and the quality isn't as good as your picture. Otto

Re: 3 Olives
Great flies guys.
Otto - Could you share your recipe? Wow, a size 28 is tiny. I am interested to see what materials you used, to enable tying so small.

Otto,
#28? Are you kidding me? My eyes hurt just thinking about it! That is a fine looking fly. Is that a mole fur thorax? There is no fish that wouldn't take that as the real McCoy! Thanks for sharing it with us.
