Rib: Fine copper wire
Abdomen: Mixed burnt-orange rabbit, sulfur yellow Wapsi Superfine & a pinch of chopped orange & olive antron on a dubbing loop of yellow sewing thread
Thorax: Brown puff from the base of a dyed -brown mallard flank feather arranged as a collar (orange puff for a steelhead/cutthroat version)
Hackle: Brown church window cock ringneck pheasant body feather
Head: Brown hare's mask twisted on the tying thread

Great OC pupa imitation Steve. Those larger imitation soft hackles are not easy to work out. When you get a good one stick with them. This looks to be a good one.

That is true. And particularly true regarding October Caddis, which were very frustrating for quite a few years. Still not satisfied, but this one has been pretty good the last couple seasons.

Nice pattern. How do you apply the puff? I am always on the lookout for a good October caddis pupa imitation, and this looks to be top notch. Thanks for sharing.

I wind the abdomen to the point where the hackle gets tied in; cut the puff from a feather stem, spread & arrange it around the hook shank directly ahead of the abdomen; the tips of the collar should extend back to about the middle of the abdomen -- you can pinch it to length. The material is very glassy & translucent when wet, forming a juicy miasma over the body.

This has an almost LaFontaine-like glow to it when wet. Nicely done. Have you tied it in smaller sizes?
