"How to Catch Trout"

Post by DNicolson » Mon Jul 20, 2009 2:56 pm

Whilst researching the yellow silk question,
I found an old book I bought some time ago and had forgotten. It is "How to Catch Trout" by "Three Anglers" published in Edinburgh 1888. It is said that one of the the three was E. M. Tod, author of "Wet Fly Fishing". It is quite a modest publication,
83 pages and priced one shilling (1/20th of a GBPound). This was in 1888,
Never-the-less quite a little mine of information. There are quite a few flies listed although not all have recipes. Here are some of the spiders,

Grouse Spider with dark red or orange body.

Golden Plover Spider with quill or dark orange body.

Black Spider with quill, orange silk or dark red silk body;
and spider made of black starling feather, with white tip.
I assume the quill was stripped peacock eye or
dyed stripped cock hackle.
