I'm not sure any longer why I decided or how I missed not reading all the conversation on this thread. Yesterday I decided to do just that as Syl Nemes' first book was likely responsible for some of my first experiences with the soft hackle. Well now we seem to have found ourselves questioning a knot that Syl left in a fly. How appropriate I thought. A knot we're not sure about on a fly tied and used by a wonderful gentleman that many of us have questions about as well.

Well besides what I wrote above I wanted to thank Hank as his mentioning Midge Magic that last time got me curious enough to check it out. I'm going to order the book. Ed Koch though I never met the man was another of my hero's. Short rods and fishing the midge.

"The knot" is the same knot as the "Davy knot" that Davy Wotton, Davyfly on this forum, has made known to the FF community. When using it with finer tippet, it is safer to make it a double Davy knot.

Thanks everyone for all the follow up on the knot. I wish a couple more from this collection had tippet attached. It's just interesting to not only see the flies from Nemes box, but to see how he fished them, or at least his chosen knot. Thanks for all the feed back.

Any more information that you can give us about the Knot in question?
Like how many turns go through the eye, perhaps loosen it just enough
to see how it was put together? Please ...

I took the liberty of zooming in on the knot in Williams image and screen capturing it.

It looks to me like what we are seeing is trash in the hook eye, rather than a second turn of tippet. Whatever it is, it appears to have a feathered edge showing behind the hook eye.

Thanks, Kirk. It's a pretty clean shot. When I was reading this earlier I thought about taking additional pics for inquiring minds, but as I've recently made some changes to my tying room, I put lots of things in safe places and at present I can't seem to find my collection. They're here somewhere. They better be. :D

The above is refering to this in hank's post:
On page 6 was a box
with a drawing of "The KNOT" no other name and was credited to someone's son from the Salt Lake City area
way back about 1999. Even if the tag ends up at 90° it looks like a good one to me..."

and not to Syl's knot.

You're welcome, Hank. I tried a magnifying glass first, and just had a close-up view of the pixels. :oops:

I had good stock to work from, lol.
I understand the "safe place" concept. I have quite a few items that are still safe......from me!
