Edmonds & Lee No. 10

Post by tie2fish » Thu Dec 27, 2018 7:33 am

For those who enjoy the oldies but goodies, Edmonds and Lee's fly No. 10 ... the Dark Needle, which they tie to the Perlidae or golden stonefly family.

Hook: No. 1 [approximates today's Size #15; I have used a Herter's 423 Size #14]
Hackle: Hackled with a brownish feather taken from where the hinder part of a Starling's wing joins the body (There are only about four of these feathers on each side of the bird) or with a brown feather from the back of a Swift.
Body: Orange brown silk No. 6b [aka Pearsall's "Sherry Spinner" Gossamer]
Head: Magpie herl [barbs from the center feather of a magpie's tail]

Bill,

You are a master tier, and I love seeing your renditions of these classic patterns.

Thank you for sharing the additional details about the materials and pattern. Very interesting.

Where did you tie that one off? I can't see a knot.

Double half hitch behind the hackle, Bob, followed by a liberal dose of Griff's Thin head cement.
