I have never seen the original 1839 book, the second embellished edition of 1848, or even this fly before.
I chose to tie a Marten bodied wingless wet because of some Marten scraps I acquired at the last pre-pandemic NW Expo. I could not tell from the total description I posted above that it is a no hackle dun.
I merely interpreted wings to mean a fly tied Hacklewise like the 1800's Orange Partridge. It is my understanding many of the old English patterns use "wings" or "legs" to describe flies tied only with a hackle in the round.
I intend to tie and fish it as a wingless wet emerger for PMDs.
