Moorhen Skin

Post by Rabmax » Sat Feb 20, 2010 6:05 pm

Hello all i have been lurking for a while but i now have a question regarding Moorhen skins as the waterhen bloa is one of my best spiders. I normally buy wings but have a chance of buying a skin & have been told that the moorhen neck & back feathers are also a suitable match for waterhen bloa .As i have never seen a complete skin i haven't a clue if they would be suitable can someone answer this before i shed out my money on a complete skin. Cheers

Cheers narcodod but what i want to know is if the neck & back feathers are also suitable feathers for waterhen bloas. If they are not a suitable match then i would only be using the wings from the skin.

IMO, the back feathers are way too dark to make a good waterhen bloa. They're nearly black, at least on the skin that I have. They make some interesting flies in their own right, but I would call anything tied them "bloa". I go through wings a lot faster than I've gone through my skin; I wouldn't buy another if I could get wings.

Cheers Redietz i will keep to using wings i have about 4 pair left & i am always in the lookout for more when i see them available. They are getting rather difficult to source these days even from Cookshill.I have tied quite a few Otter soft wing style up to try out this year. If they work well i shouldn't need as much moorhen as the feathers go much further. :D
