This is a fly which can be fished wet or dry, although I have always fished it wet. I first fished this fly about 1966 when I used to fish the Welsh Dee and river Vrnwy in North Wales. It was that good I never had it off my cast! It is one of six flies created by author Walter Gallichan (1861-1946). The flies are well known in the Welsh Borderlands.
My dressing:-
Kamasan B405 size 14 hook
Uni-thread 8/0 red
Body of dubbed Vicuña fine grey dubbing withe a red thread tip
Few whisks of the hackle for the tail.
Indian hen saddle cape ginger variant hackle.
[Note - the original dressing has a blue dun rusty hackle and uses the blue rabbit under fur. I have always tied it with a gingerish hackle. There is no colour difference between the blue rabbit under fur and the Vicuña dubbing used.]
