Discovered Prairie Chicken

Post by Caveman » Mon Nov 10, 2025 12:35 am

Hey all and thanks for the add. I just discovered this site while searching for Prairie Chicken patterns, and have browsing for about a week now.

I just bought two Prairie Chicken skins from a member on one of the Washington forums. Enough for several lifetimes of soft hackles! First time tying with these feathers and was shocked at how large these are. I'm used to tying with Hungarian partridge, still using a skin from the late 90s, ohh how prices have changed haha!

Definitely a challenge getting these to work on a size 14 TMC3761 hook but thanks to another post on here it was much easier with Charlie Cravens method of tying larger hackle feathers onto smaller hooks. Works very well, probably best in somebody else's hands but this will fish.

Looking forward to learning from some amazing tiers here and am already so impressed with what I've seen so far. Brian

Hi Brian. Prairie chicken is awesome, and yes, prices have gone up, but like the fools we are we keep paying for the materials we use.
