Nothing Rhymes with Orange

Post by CreationBear » Sun Jul 10, 2011 12:45 pm

I'm starting to have dreams about Pycnopsyche these days, so I hacked out this standard issue flymph last night:

One thing that is a bit different about it is that I used a technique that Mitch Smith (of eponymous bobbin fame) shows in one of his videos. There, he ties a floss "dubbing loop" at the end of the hook, then captures a length of wire inside it; when he spins it and winds it on, it produces a fancy tag on the salmon fly he's tying. Here, I took a length of Marabou silk floss, separated it the way Ray talks about in his caddis larvae tutorial , and formed a loop with about a third of of the strands. I used some blue wire to get a bit variegation for an abdomen, but I can imagine any number of useful floss/wire color combinations. (FWIW, if you tie with an undivided section of floss, you can come up with a pretty good impression of a cased caddis.)

Outstanding in all respects.

"The only word in the 20-volume historical Oxford English Dictionary that rhymes with orange is sporange, a very rare alternative form of sporangium (a botanical term for a part of a fern or similar plant)." (Source: http://oxforddictionaries.com/page/wordsrhymeorange)

I can almost imagine this underwater, fightin' its way to the surface!, all twitchy and legs going. Beauty.

How about the Orange Melange (meaning a mixture). Sounds good to me-"Oranzgh Melanzgh" . Maurice Chevalier I'm not, but you get the idea.

CreationBear, Howdy;

Was so awestruck I forgot to ask if you'd post the recipe for this fly.
