Yellow Whisker

Post by Smuggler » Sat Feb 02, 2013 2:09 pm

This morning I was vacuuming the place and found one of the cats whiskers laying on the floor. I picked it up and thought to myself... I bet this would be nice to tie with. And so...

Some spacing issues with wrapping but, it doesn't look too bad.
Hook: Alec Jackson Size. 11. (Hopelessly addicted to these hooks)
Silk: Yellow, waxed
Body: Cat whisker
Thorax: Pre-blended beaver/squirrel dubbing
Collar: Hun. Partridge back feather.

I put a coating of sally hensens over the body to protect the whisker. ;)
Enjoy~

The whisker was a fortuitous find .... it turned into the basis for a beautiful pattern. Props for your resourcefulness.

I like the looks of that hook as well. Very cool using the cats whisker for that.

Marvelous fly! The whisker produces a lovely segmented body. Nice hook, too.

Whiskers are cool to use. Different animals will give different colouration. Aussie possum ones are near jet black, Euro Hare are white for most of the length from the tip to black at the roots- other smaller ones on the same hare will be black.
Nice use of a material of fortunate gain. :)

Eric, that is a wonderful combination. I like these "quill" bodies and that whisker is great. I've tried hare whiskers, and those are cool, but it's a limited supply. This...is just beautiful.

Great looking body. Neighbours cats better watch out. I'm on the prowl.:-)

Is that the AJ soft hackle or the AJ North country? Which do you preferr?

Smuggler,
I have three cats that contribute practically nothing to the total harmony that I like to think exists at my house save Ross who contributed (to my daughters objections) some beautiful gray belly fur early in his career! Thank you for opening up another venue for tying supplies that has existed right under my.....feet! Great looking fly!
