Caddis Pupa/Stone Nymph - Tutorial/SBS Tying Instructions

I have used this particular pattern most every Spring during high water (run-off). It is tied as a Caddis Pupa, but being a rather large pattern (Size 8), I am inclined to believe the fish take it for a Stonefly Nymph. In either case it has been a very reliable Spring time pattern for me.

Hook - Dai-Riki 135, size 8 (I also tie them in size 10)
Thread/Under Body - Benecchi 12/0, Sand
Abdomen - Medium Olive Brown D-Rib
Thorax - Equal parts of Brown and Rainbow Wee Folk Dubbing
Collar - Brown Partridge
Head - Ginger Ostrich Herl



Most all of the ingredients can be substituted. All but one. The Ginger ostrich makes the pattern for me. I do not know why, but that is the only item that has to stay true to the recipe, and I have no idea why.

If all goes well I will be catching trout on these next Sunday.

I tie it in where the thorax and abdomen meet, as I am wrapping from the eye to the bend. I wrap towards the bend in touching wraps over the D-Rib. I stretch the D-Rib very tight as I wrap over it. Thread color is an important consideration with this pattern. The color you choose will have an affect on the color of the abdomen after you wrap the D-Rib over the thread base. I prefer light colored thread. Dark threads over whelm the color of the D-Rib. Light colors enhance it. In my opinion.

I use a similar pattern over here but in either black or olive D rib and no hackle........ might have to tie up some hackled versions for next season.

Jeff, I was hoping you would take a peek at this pattern. It's not often I tie a size 8. Had you in mind while I was taking the pictures. "Hope this fly is big enough for that darn Kiwi!"

I am often more to be dammed than darned...... but it is nice to see you can carry neat form no matter if it is #8 or 28! I struggle with that.
The ones I use are from #14-18 and #18 is getting pretty small for me. I need to work on proportions and neatness for hooks smaller than #20, they do work here- just I cannot do them justice!

Different looking, and looks like a killer fly too. Well done!

Great profile to the fly and with a lot of movement as well for a large fly. I think that is key to larger flies, incorportating movement. Many of the larger stonefly nymphs and and similar patterns are too stagnant to me.
