Dubbed Dark Watchet

Post by Old Hat » Wed Jul 05, 2017 7:34 pm

Worked on these today. Product of a subtle challenge by Mr. Tengrove. Purple dyed mole dubbed to 1 strand of a split Pearsall's thread then retwisted.

What size is the hook? It looks tiny (sub 18).

Immaculate tying, as always.

You're already using two strands of thread for the body, essentially a split "orange-purple" thread. Why not just apply the dubbing to one of those two strands before twisting them together? It's the way I do it, and am curious about why anybody would it differently for this particular fly?

Hook is a #16 Partridge G3AY.

No, I split the 3 strand orange Pearsall's. That leaves a 1 strand and a 2 strand. I dubbed purple dyed mole onto the 1 strand piece and then re twisted the thread and wrapped it up.

I was talking on another site that by dubbing either the 1 strand or 2 strand how you could adjust the ribbing effect and amount of thread that shows through the body of the fly. I do this with smaller flymphs. Tim had asked if it could be used on a dark watchet. I had mole dyed purple so gave it a go.

Love the effect, Carl. Nicely done.

Old/New Hat, Howdy;

Does make a nice looking fly indeed.

Carl, I absolutely dig this technique, especially with such short staple fibers as mole. That is a very compelling little fly. Masterfully done. I've done this with some little pale, mole on primrose blow bodies. The contrast here is really striking. I'm going up have to dye up some mole in purple now.
