Just playing with materials - Emerger Soft Hackle Patterns

Post by letumgo » Sun Jun 03, 2018 9:04 am

Maybe this post does not belong in this section, but since the post is about tying soft hackle emergers, this is where I started. We can move it to another section, if more appropriate.

I spent some time yesterday playing with some new materials. I ended up tying some soft hackles in many different styles, to see how the materials behave. Overall, the flies looked like they will fish well (still to be proven).

Top Center: Tenkara style with high vis post
Middle Row: Buzzer/Shipman Style with tailing shuck (middle left); Trude Style with tailing shuck (middle center); Quigley Cripple Soft Hackle (middle right)
Bottom Row: Thorax Style Fymph with tailing shuck (bottom left); Hackled body wingless wet (bottom center and right) - combined hen body hackle with grouse collar

General Listing of Materials Used:
Hackle - Herbert Miner Hen Neck feathers (Medium Brown Dun) and Ruffed Grouse back feathers (natural mottled brown)
Hook - Mustad 3906 (size 12) short shank wet fly hook
Thread - 8/0 UNI-Thread (Olive Dun)
Dubbing - Fly Tying Dungeon's "Bull Frawg Mottled Dubbing" (various colors)
Wing (sorry - yes a couple of these patterns have wings to help suspend the fly in the surface film) - Fly Tying Dungeon's "Hi Float Fibers"
Trailing Shuck - Fly Tying Dungeons "Shuck Yarn" (various colors)

I made up a travel kit by combining several strands of every color together with a zip-tie. This way I have all the colors handy in a small batch for my travel tying kit. Much easier than pawing thru all the bags, just to find what your looking for.

The top hank of materials is the Shuck Yarn. The bottom hank is the High Float Fibers (one side has been brushed out, to make it easy to blend the fibers to get the desired color).

I have no affiliation with Fly Tying Dungeon. I am simply a happy customer. Their materials are very reasonably priced, compared with other sellers, and the quality of the materials is first rate.

Now that I've had a chance to play with these materials, I'm very happy with them. This little combination of dubbing blends, and shuck yarn/hi float fibers makes a perfect travel kit.

Great looking flies, Ray. Don't you think I should be getting some royalties from the folks in the Dungeon? ;)

Nah. That would just raise the price of their materials. I'm just happy using their materials for fishing flies. The main consideration is that they are mostly synthetics. Some folks would not be interested, for that reason. As an experimentalist tyer, I enjoy playing around with all kinds of materials (natural and man-made). Opens up a broad range of tying options, with the possibility of finding something to solve particular angling challenges. Having a cheap source of materials (FTD), scratches my itch...

I just reread your post Bill, and realized I misread your post. Yes, as Mr. Shuck himself, you probably should be getting a royalty.

More experimentation.

Another Shipman style (top) and three Tenkara style soft hackles. I like how the body turned out on the bottom one (pheasant tail and dun kebari). Gotta add a few more of these to my box...

Photos appear clearly this morning, Ray. Excellent tenkara style tying.
