Caddis

Post by newriverspey » Fri Aug 24, 2018 5:26 pm

Hello,

It has been a bit since I have posted something. The new look of the forum is great! Here is a soft hackle caddis #18 that is currently working well for me.

Very nice!

What hook is this tyed on? Is this a competition hook?

Do you fish this in tandem with any other flies, or as a single?

Sorry for all the questions, but this fly gets me excited about fishing. :D

Nice pattern that reminds me of Roger Woolley's Grayling Steel Blue from his book Modern Trout Fly Dressing, (first edition 1932, second 1939, Fishing Gazette). RW names it Steel Blue, Grayling was added later. Niklas Dahlin has posted about it on another forum https://www.sparsegreymatter.com/viewtopic.php?t=6754 and on the tube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NO8YpQeE8GE

I like both your pattern and his dry classic one. I will tie your fly and fish them in tandem...

Ray,

Yes, that is a competition hook (Hanak) and I fish them in tandem. Sometimes I use the same fly and other times I vary the point fly. Hopefully tomorrow I will be able to fish in the afternoon and will take some pictures.

DD, thanks for the compliment and indeed this flies looks very similar to Roger Woolley's Grayling Steel Blue. The video is great and thanks for sending the link!

Very nice indeed.

I managed to get out Sunday and swing some flies for trout. The weather was very cooperative and the bugs were coming off the water. My friend and I loaded his drift boat and got off to a late start. We started with two caddis flies in tandem and that seemed to be the ticket. We caught several fish from both the drift boat and wade fishing. Overall, it was a great relaxing day and it was enjoyable catching fish on soft hackles.

Man, what a day! Those trout are gorgeous. I love the surprised expression on the face of the deer. :D
