Soft Hackle Materials - Reference Sheet

Post by letumgo » Sun Sep 09, 2018 9:58 am

After attending a few soft hackle tying sessions a few years ago, I noted how often people asked about where to buy materials for soft hackle flies, and what references would be good sources for further reading. I pulled together this reference sheet, in hopes of refining it at some point into a handout for participants.

Anyway, I'd appreciate any feedback that people can provide (i.e. - additional material sources, recommended references, key search words, editing suggestions). Maybe we can update this reference...

Oh Great... all I need is more stuff to read on the internet... This is an amazing list and greatly appreciated. I especially appreciate the downloadable old books... great reference.

It definitely needs work, but it’s a start. Eventually I’d like to have this updated and made more presentable. Until then, this is a start.

Ray, Howdy;

Sadly, I tried Donald's link and his website is no longer on the web.
Also as his birthday is the 4th of July, I've sent him birthday greetings
via email and have only heard back from his nephew (?) 2 years ago ...
nothing this year so, ... I at a loss as to what to say or suggest.

Hank,

I miss Donald too. I wish we knew how he was doing, and could convey our best regards.

Donald did send me his full collected reference material several years ago. I believe I have the full content of his website, in the form of a PDF file. He poured himself into the history of these flies.

This really an excellent spreadsheet, Ray. Even the experienced tyer will find interesting and helpful information here. I think it should be pinned at the top of not only this forum subject, but the "Reference Material" section as well.

Also, I encourage those of you who have discovered out-of-the-way sources for special or hard to find materials over the years to contact Ray with the pertinent contact information so he can add them to the list.

By the way, it may be helpful to know that after you click on Ray's link to access the spreadsheet, look for the PDF download link at the bottom left of your screen and click on it.
