Edmonds & Lee No. 13a

Post by tie2fish » Sat Dec 08, 2018 9:52 am

Part of the effort by Edmonds and Lee in Brook and River Trouting to consolidate the number of fly patterns a fisherman needs to carry, No. 13a is proposed for use as either a Dark Watchet or an Iron Blue Dun.

Hook: 0 or 00 (approximately #15 to #17 on modern scale), best shorter than the #16 Mustad 94840 I've used
Tying Thread: Pearsall's Gossamer #6a, light orange
"Wings": Hackled with dark smoky blue feather from a Jackdaw's throat
Body: Orange (#6a) and Purple (#8) twisted together and dubbed vary sparingly with Mole's fur and wound on the body so that the orange and purple show in alternate bands
Head: Orange tying silk

Jackdaw is such an interesting hackle. The thinner fibers and high mobility of these make them seem so delicate. It's aways fun to see a fly that looks like it should be moving even while in the vise. Nice representation of the original.

I’ve tied it in the last Fly swop, I think! But i didn’t have Jackdaw so I think I must try to locate some.
Love both fly fishing and fly tying, been doing it for a while
But not much good at either

Find a shop that carries Veniard products -- they package jackdaw scalps.
