Over on the Classic Fly Rod (Bamboo) Forum, there is a long-running (multi-year) post about Chadwick's 477 and its substitutes. Complete with pictures and names you will recognize................

Thanks Ken. Looks like a lot for me to go thru.

Finished going through it. Then I went back through it again. Wow, very informative. I never would have thought about using guitar pickup winding wire for tying flies. I've played guitar for 50+ years. Much cheaper in the long run. If they only made it in gold! Gonna order a spool of red. There will be enough left over for my grand kid's grand kids!

I just read 5 pages of the other forum's discussion of Chadwicks, etc... I will go back and read the rest as the discussion is very interesting. Now for some blaspheming..... PhilA was kind enough to send me a very nice sample of the yarn and wire he has found for KB's. I spend some time trying to tie with the wire using the Edwards video as a guide. I must say, it was a steep learning curve to manage the wire. I also watched Davey McPhails version and tried that too. I fished with both and the fish didn't know the difference.
Now for the blasphemy.... I tied some with non-lead wire underbody...covered that with reddish threads, and OMG the fish ate them too...I'm sure they wouldn't pass muster with the traditional recipe and I haven't done a side by side comparison when wet, but what matters to me is will a fish eat one.mine were size 14 and 16s... the 16's worked better in my water...

I just read on FB that Vicuña Dubbing is coming out with a new line of blends including a Chadwick’s 477 substitute. There’s not much information yet but I believe there will also be a Tup’s blend.

Get-slotted in the UK will be the first merchant to have it. I think it will be sold in an assortment box to start. They don’t have it yet.

Awhile back, I cut some of the Shetland SpIndrift 290 Oyster yarn into small pieces and blended it in an old coffeee grinder. Did a red wire underbody and then touch dubbed the blended yarn dubbing onto a Danville 6/0 red thread. Wehn dipped in water, a noticeable color change from a tan / brown dubbing into a tannish / pinkish color. Remember that a close up look at the Oyster 290 dubbing will reveal some red and green fibers within the twisted yarn.
