Bob-- Any chance you could share the recipe for your Grouse & Herl? I'm afraid the board's "search" function is a bit idiosyncratic.

At any rate, thanks for sharing your insights--food for thought for all Eastern freestoner fishermen, I think. (In fact, I wish I could draft some of y'all into onto a "Fly of the Month" thread, where you'd post pictures of your favorite flies for the succession of hatches. :) )

It's really just the old standby, the Brown Hackle with English Red Grouse as the brown:

Hook: Mustad R50, size 14 (sometimes I go as big as 10, when I'm expecting to fishing over Iso's.)
Thread: Orange Silk (or just use black 8/0 unithread)
Hackle: From back of English red grouse
Tag: Gold tinsel or gold wire
Rib: Fine gold wire
Body: Peacock Herl

Here's one after about 25 fish:

(I can't find the battery charger to my camera, or I'd post a pic of a new one.)

Bob-- Excellent...no worries about a better picture, that one gives me the idea. (And another excuse to use English Grouse...a really beautiful feather, I think. :) )
