Wayne, you've done very well in every regard with this batch. The first set as an exercise in contrast should be very effective. I quite like the contrast and the move to an underbody did wonders for making a smoother taper. But holy cow, that last fly posted is just wonderfully done and beautifully photographed. If that was your goal...you nailed it. Great work. Now time to celebrate with some bbq.

FWIW, I find when using the medium size uniwire, you can tie in under the thorax and wrap down the body in tight wraps to the desired length and break off the wire. It'll stay put and allows an easier fly to tie. That works with the smaller sizes as well, but I like to bring the wire back up as a rib on smaller wire. Just $.02.

great job.

Jon, you kill me with those patterns. That is very cool.

very nice set of flies!

the best way i know of to have no gaps between wire wraps is to wrap the wire in touching turns with the previous wrap.

i will angle the wire toward the bend, touching the previous wrap of wire as i wrap forward. repeat.

a smooth underbody will also help

i also tie in the wire at the forward end of where the thorax will end. this will allow no bumps in the body. bumps will occur if the wire is tied in at the bend.

First off let me thank everyone for their ideas and very kind words. This forum is an amazing resource, and every time I sit down to tye, I am glad I found it.

Norm, serious, I was trying to make touching wraps. On every fly I was trying. I have said this before, I need a magnifying glass. My eyes are getting bad.

Will, and Norm. I have tyed wire bodies before. They are not in the same category as either of yours or Creationbears patterns, but they dont look as bad as the first flys I posted in this thread. Previous patterns had no tails. It was the tail on this pattern that was giving me "tyers block". Tyers block is my term for being eaten up with the dumb a**.

I couldt get a good touching wrap base with my thread, no matter how I tyed. Just a hang up I guess. When tying patterns without a tail, I start the wire between the abdomen, and thorax, wrap back towards the bend of the hook, then rib as William instructed. It turns out ok for me. All I really know now is, I have a lot more to practice on this technique.

Kelly, I too like two tone flys. I tyed one up with Red and Gold as you instructed, and another with the midge tubing with a gold wire core. Here they are.

Again, thank you all for the great advice,

Wayne

Goodness sakes these flies are outstanding Wayne! I loved your initial "fishing" flies, but was blown away by the subseqent posts. Top shelf quality flies and then some. Terrific photos too. Inspiring...

FWIW, I think the version with "gaps" deserves a place along side the "gapless" version. I like the look of the underbody showing thru between the wire wraps. I'd space the wraps out a bit more to accentuate the segmentation and color difference. Just my personal opinion.

Oh, no! It is I that should be sorry. The help and advice you gave is appreciated, and I will use your tecniques. I did a terrible job of conveying my gratitude Norm.

I have respected, and admired your work for years. Any time you throw a peice of advice out, I pay attention. I am quite embarrassed that my poor communication skills would make you feel that your apology would be in order.

Yours in the sport,

Wayne
