OK, not sure if this is going to work too good, maybe my photography skill arent quite there, the light was not good...... or some other multitude of excuses I could come up with, but each "sample" below has a "virgin" example of the yarn at top (marked with a red dot) and the waxed version below.

In all reality, apart from Bill's Cobbles wax it is very hard to see a difference!
Here is each by itself.

Sno-Seal paste wax (leather boot dressing  )

Image

Overtons Wonder Wax. I know, not the sort of wax one would normally use to colour a silk, but it was handy.

Image

Wapsi Premium Dubbing Wax (super sticky formula). Beastly stick to any and everything wax, again not a normal colouring wax.......

Let me know if there is some interest and I shall see what I can do.
Yes, please.

Thanks Jeff. It seems that the dark cobblers wax give the most dramatic change in color.

Mataura mayfly, Howdy;

From what my tired eyes see is that the 'waxed' samples
don't show the cording of the raw samples, (the wax filling
the grooves), a few extreamly subtle changes in color but,
as you pointed out, Bill Bailey's Cobblre's has the most
pronounced change.

Thanks for doing this....

Camera batteries went flat just after taking those shots and are currently being charged. Give me the time over the weekend and I will tie a fly of each sample that has been waxed, therein might lay the more visual changes once wrapped on a shank.

Hank, you are correct, subtle changes in colour, but the wax does fill any cavity in the yarn- but does not "slick" back all the errant fibres that wool yarn is known for. Perhaps it is the nylon 10% that is argumentative and will not lay flat, not sure, but I prefer a few fibres astray to give that buggy look.

OK, dull overcast and light rain here this morning and have to go look at an open home mid afternoon and I promised some tied fly comparisons.
So here we go "Clockwork Orange"!

Image

From top, clockwise: Sno-seal paste wax, Overtons Wonder Wax, Wapsi Premium dubbing wax (super sticky formula), Baileys Fly Tying Wax, Baileys White Wax, Baileys Cobblers Wax and lastly Jim's Fly Co. Leisnring/Keene Wax.

I was surprised just how dark the dubbing waxes made the yarn. Not sure if they will stay there or wash out, but they go near as dark as Bills Cobblers. Mr Baileys white wax does exactly that- leaves a white translucent glow to the yarn, but for my money the Jim's fly Co. wax is lighter or effects the yarn less.

Another shot.

Very nice material. I was drooling over it when you first showed it in your other post. I have never thought of waxing wool yarn. I particularly like the one waxed with the cobbler's. The waxing seems to bring out some depth in the fly that I like and think the fish will agree.
