After trying to tie a couple of these I have a new respect for the example you've posted in the OP.

The video was very helpful, your ability to get the thread just right in quick time amazed me. But how did you get the body wraps so neat?!

Eye sight is a big part of it - without good vision close up it will be a tricky proposition.

Assuming you have the vision aspect covered, is hand eye coordination, with two additions:

- keep the distance from bobbin to shank short for better control
- wrap with ever so slight back-angle, so that each successive wrap almost slides off the preceding one

A very informative thread. Thanks guys for the questions and thanks Hans for the answers.

I fight hackle stems also as my first turn doesn't want to lay as neatly as Hans' turns do. It might take a fingernail crimp of the hackle stem to get them to turn neatly.
