Don't worry about the wax coming off. I've been using Bill's wax for years and never had a problem, even on the hottest days. A friend of mine from New Zealand went to visit relatives in Scotland. He stopped in a fly shop and bought some supplies and some Pearsall's silks. The shop keeper asked what he was tying and he replied "Greenwell's Glory". He was advised to "pop around to the cobbler's shop to get some wax so the wee flies will be the proper color". I guess the cobblers in Scotland still do things the old way.

Very nice dressing of a classic pattern Kelly, one that fishes well where ever trout choose to live.

Thank you Chase Creek, and John. John, I have a magnifier similar to what you have there, but it isn't strong enough for me. I am a little over do for my next eye exam. I know I am going to need stronger glasses, again. I am near sighted in one eye, far sighted in the other, and then I have pretty bad astigmatism in both.
Jeff, I don't get to see much trout here. But the sunfish seem to like them quite well. Sadly it wasn't a good day for fishing. But a Partridge and Green, and a Snipe and Yellow saved my day. I thought after that rain, the lake level would of risen more. We have been in a drought, and it has been bad fishing mostly for three years now. I caught a couple when there was nobody catching, and they were even resorting to worms...so I don't feel to bad about it. I am anxious to get some more spiders done.

Thank you Ray. I am glad you are back now. It has been quiet in here somewhat. You know if I am caught up in the posts, there hasn't been enough talking going on! I am glad also that you liked my flies. Thanks for letting me know.

Kelly this one patterns accounts for about 60% of the fish that I catch using spiders. I tie mine with a rolled starling wing (split) and standing upright. Try some of these also.

That sounds cool. Can you post a photo, or one that looks like it? Are you using the primary or secondary feather for that?

I decided to tie a few with a tail. Has anyone noticed a difference in fishing with tail, or without? I prefer to tie it without. This hook is a 3906 comparable hook. It is an L10-2H. I will next show a photo of the same fly, without tail, on a Daiichi 1640 hook. Thoughts or comments welcome. I finished my row of Greenwell Spiders. Now I have to decide what I am gonna tie next.

I kinda like it without a tail, but if you're going to add one, I think it looks better with a lot fewer fibers -- you're not trying to support a dry fly. My opinion, YMMV.

When in doubt add the tail. It can be removed stream side easier than adding one. I vote for tail. On some patterns like this one, I like the fuller tail.
