I use a few things that work good as heron substitute. Usually it just depends on how it is to be used and the size of the fly. On this one I used Blue Eared Pheasant hackle that was intended for spey flies. It was a packaged purchase and just looked like heron. Emu can make a decent substitute as well and for smaller flies, pheasant tail dyed dun works good. I just listed it as "heron substitute" because the original pattern calls for heron herl.
