Because I deal with mass quantities of dubbing I use hand cards for carding. Some people use a dog hair slicker brush which works similarly. An "old timer" fly tyer once showed me a technique where he held the dubbing between thumb and forefinger and used a old toothbrush to align the fibers and remove the "shorts" as he called the tiny fibers which mat the dubbing.
