To add to what has already been mentioned, it is a tactile pleasure to tie with silk. Since I don't have enough time at the water I have to squeeze out the most of everything else that go along with our pastime/addiction. I keep my reference set (http://flytierspage.com/temp_pix/pearsa ... chart.pdf) of Pearsall's gossamer silk in one of these "display boxes". Image
I store them properly, but now and then I pull them out and just look at them. Just another way to use them. My "working silk" is stored in Myran compartment boxes.
I use silk for them same reason I fish with a fly rod; it makes me feel good.
