Donald whilst there are indeed many coarse hooks available within the UK market and some people do try to dress spider on them. The Kamasan B525 being the classic example which some people like to pay through the nose for when it is relabelled Alex Jackson. However the are several problems with using coarse hooks, firstly the depth of throat in relation to shank length is often too great,with the hook point often finishing just behind the eye. Also the wire is often too heavy for modern sensibilities as the modern spider enthusiast has become fixated with light wire hooks. The gape is also quite narrow on many coarse hooks.
The difference with Partridge is that the company actually likes to design its own range of fly hooks rather than just feeding off the coarse market. This ideology can be seen in several ranges of their hooks such as Klinkhammer Hooks, Czech Nymph Hooks, Ollie Edwards Swimming Nymph Hooks and now the Classic Spider Hook.
I designed the hook for Partridge and would not give my name to it if it was little more than coarse hook.

You know I read this thread and was sure I had messed up buying the Alec Jackson soft hackle hooks. For one thing they were smaller than I thought they'd be, but I loved them. I am gonna get the biggest two sizes, and hope I can see them. Now, I read Kamasan has a comparable hook much cheaper. I was all set to try to find some on the internet, when I ran into a tying from who is from England. He says the Kamasan hooks are crap. So, please respond to this. I am going to start a hook thread, since nobody answered the hook reference question I had. I would subscribe to this thread, but do not know how to do so. I looked earlier. I hope several people will voice an opinion on this. My resources are very limited, so I don't want to waste money.

You might want to inform your friend in the UK, that Daiichi and Kamasan are the same hook company! The Alex Jackson hooks are nothing more than Kamasan B525s I should know I have been using them for over 12 years

Bob - Thanks for that info. I can easily get the Daiichi hooks locally, but would have to order the Kamasam hooks on-line. You've just saved me the hassle. Do you know what the Kamasan B175 would be in the Daiichi model?

I will have a scan through my PDFs of hook patterns and suppliers and come back to you on that

He is in England, but his shipping costs are reasonable and service is first rate. I have been tying some of Stewart's spiders on his hooks. Simple, but very fishy looking.
